    3rd SUNDAYS of the month - 10am-3pm

    The Wiley Coyotes

We're a group of shooters that are dedicated to the Cowboy way. Most of our shooters are members of SASS but we are not an affiliated club.

We are located in north west New Jersey a few miles from Hackettstown and sponsored by the Shongum Sportsman Club. We shoot the third Sunday of the month. New shooters are always welcome. Please check the Calendar Page for more information and for any special events.

Wiley Coyotes Cowboy ShootWe are a group of shooters dedicated to the ways of the old west. This means we use firearms typical of the old west era (1860-1899). This consists of Single Action pistols (fixed or adjustable sights), lever action rifles in pistol caliber and side by side or pre 1899 lever action or pump shotguns. The unique thing about our sport is the authentic period costumes (1866-1899 or "Hollywood Western" wear) and the use of an alias and character you will be known by. Come out and take a look and see if it doesn't look like the set of Tombstone. A lot of our members enjoy the authentic look as much as they enjoy shooting, but if you have a pair of boots, jeans and long sleeve work shirt and a cowboy hat your on your way. We are always willing to help and suggest with outfits and equipment but to get the full list of calibers and models allowed in our sport you can go to www.sassnet.com  and open the shooters handbook.

This is a live fire sport, so as such our first concern is SAFETY. Our targets are metal reactive targets so eye and ear protection must be worn by everyone on the range at all times. All new shooters will buddy up with one of our members for their first shoot and subsequent shoots if needed.

Our required safety meeting starts at 9:45 and the shoot starts at 10:00 am. Lunch is usually available for a nominal fee and the fee for the shoot is 10.00Our second concern is FUN , we are all here to have fun, but make no mistake, this is a competitive sport with shooters around the world and major matches seen on TV. It's all about the Cowboy Way and feeling young at heart. Do you remember your pearl (plastic) handled cap guns, your trusty steed and your first Red Rider BB gun? That's what this is all about, whether you want to ride with the Lone Ranger or Paladin or compete with the best, everyone’s welcome and encouraged to be whoever they want to be.

The League’s purpose is to train youth in the safe handling of firearms, sportsmanship and marksmanship. Safety is very important in the sport, as the results of unsafe rifle handling can be grave. On the other hand, because of the emphasis that is placed on safety, legitimate firearms usage is an extremely safe activity, safer than any other youth sport. All youth are trained and tested in safety before they are allowed to use a rifle on the range.

The Junior League uses a program established by the NRA to instruct youth in marksmanship. Our coaches have been trained by the CMP/USA Shooting/NRA combined coach program. Our coaches have the highest rating available, Advanced International Rifle Coach.

In the Junior League youth are given the opportunity to participate in competitive rifle shooting. We participate in the New Jersey Association of Rifle and Pistol Clubs matches, and youth who participate in those matches can be selected to be sponsored by the association to participate in the NRA National Matches at Camp Perry, USA Shooting Nationals at Fort Benning or the Junior Olympics. Youth from our club who have the discipline to excel in competitive shooting can earn college scholarships.

    Cost: $5.00 per night.

Other: Equipment and ammunition are provided that can take most youth to the Sharpshooter level.
