The Pistol League was originally started in the mid-1970s by the Paper Punchers, who merged with the Comanche Bowmen to form the Shongum Sportsmen's Association.
Shooting programs covered include the following:
NRA Bullseye
Individual NRA Bullseye Leagues are fired using .22, Centerfire and .45 Caliber pistols. The course of fire is the National Match course, a combination of slow, timed and rapid fire stages using the B2 and B3 targets. Slow fire is 10 shots fired in 5 minutes, timed fire is 2 strings of 5 shots fired in 20 seconds per string and rapid fire is 2 strings of 5 shots fired in 10 seconds per string. Each National Match course covers 30 shots. The shooting is one-handed and there are no sight categories. Each evening's shooting will consist of two relays. These leagues are sanctioned by the NRA and can be used for obtaining an Indoor Pistol classification.
Police “L”
The Police “L” League uses both a .22 and a Centerfire pistol with a relay of .22 and a relay of Centerfire fired each night of the program. The course of fire is a special National Match course, also a combination of slow, timed and rapid fire stages, but using a special Police “L” targets sized for our 50-foot range. Slow fire is 10 shots fired in 4 minutes, timed fire is 2 strings of 5 shots fired in 15 seconds per string and rapid fire is 2 strings of 5 shots fired in 11 seconds per string. Each National Match course covers 30 shots. The shooting is one-handed and there are no sight categories.
Paper Silhouette
The Paper Silhouette League is a .22 Rifle and Pistol program using paper versions of International Handgun Metallic Silhouette Association animal targets.
Each evening's shooting requires two 20-shot strings with each gun fired in 8 minutes per string. The targets used are the TQ 12, TQ13 and TQ 14 targets. Two-handed shooting is allowed and there are categories for iron sights and any sights.
International Centerfire
The International Centerfire League is a 60-shot course consisting of 30 rounds of slow fire and 30 shots of rapid fire. Slow fire will consist of 3 stings of 10 shots fired in 5 minutes per string. Scoring will take place after every 10 shots. Rapid fire will consist of 6 strings of 5 shots. When the command to load is given each shooter will assume the ready position with the loaded pistol held at a 45-degree angle from the floor. The targets will face the shooter for 3 seconds, during which the shooter will fire 1 shot. The targets will edge for 7 seconds and then reappear for 3 seconds. The sequence will continue until 5 shots are fired. The shooter must reassume the 45-degree ready position for each shot. A second string will be fired. Scoring will take place after every 10 shots.
International rules require the use of a centerfire pistol. It can be a revolver or semi-auto but it must be no larger than .38 caliber and use lead bullets only. A .357 Magnum may be used, but not with magnum loads.
International Standard Pistol
The International Standard Pistol League is a 60-shot course consisting of 20 shots of slow fire, 20 shots of timed fire and 20 shots of rapid fire.
Slow fire will consist of 2 stings of 10 shots fired in 5 minutes per string. Scoring will take place after every 10 shots. Timed fire will consist of 4 strings of 5 shots and rapid fire will consist of 4 strings of 5 shots. When the command to load is given each shooter will assume the ready position with the loaded pistol held at a 45-degree angle from the floor. The targets will face the shooter for 20 seconds for each timed fire string and 10 seconds for each rapid fire string. Scoring will take place after every 10 shots.
International rules require the use of an iron sight 22 pistol or revolver pistol.
Nights at the Range
The "Nights at the Range" events are one-night programs. Each event has a specific focus, such as type or size of gun used as well as the course of fire. Each course of fire requires the use of 50 rounds of ammunition and targets may be bullseye targets, large silhouette targets, targets of geometric shapes or even paper plates.
Each league lasts for 8 weeks and the league fee is $10.00. The fee for the "Nights at The Range" event is $2.00.
